ROCK-MECHANICA
and
Alexander Liapin –
Musician, Composer, Producer (ASCAP Member)
Alexander Liapin is an indefatigable experimenter, composer anarchist, and researcher – an avant-guardist of musical domains, who applies his impeccable musical craftsmanship to his project Rock-Mechanica based on unique instrumental, musical and artistic concepts combined with digital technology.
The idea of the project began with subtle experimentation mixing the genres of Rock and Jazz, Blues, Hip-Hop and World Music, using state of the art technological resources. Not a single show repeats itself. The ever-changing cast of musicians and performers, along with the inspired participation of stimulated audiences, creates unique designs for each show, so that within each “interactive jam-session” a form of improvisational theatre emerges.
Each of Liapin’s tours and performances include workshops for professional musicians as well as members of the audience. This intense and unforgettable learning experience turns into a powerful and meaningful extension of the communion between the performers, their message and the audience.
In his native Russia, Alexander (Sasha) Liapin is a living and performing legend of the Russian Rock-n-Roll scene. He is also a highly respected and desired virtuoso Master Guitar Teacher. In 1998 Alexander was personally invited by Sir Paul McCartney to teach a Master Class at the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts. This marked the highest recognition of “Sasha’s international level of musicianship and it placed him among the ‘pantheon’ of musicians such as Eddie Van Halen, Eric Clapton, S.R.Vaughn, and, last, but not least – Dave Stewart (Eurythmics) whose project in Russia, Radio Silence, in 1988… was literally saved by Sasha’s ability to play.”(Pavel Brun).
Liapin is an exceptional and most refreshing figure on the current musical world scene. His name is already well-known worldwide, including in the United States, where he has toured and played on three occasions (a 1990 concert at the LA Palladium and studio recording, a 1998 nationwide tour with the popular Russian band Aquarium, and the latest sojourn from 2002-2004 specifically detailed below). He has been a current and well-respected member of ASCAP (USA) since 2004.
History
Liapin began his stage career in the late sixties, and in 1974-1975 he disclosed his originality and skills playing underground rock in St. Petersburg. (All Rock-n-Roll before Gorbachev had to be underground, a testament to the devotion and boldness of those musicians). His real success and recognition came in 1982 when he joined St. Petersburg’s (Russia) Aquarium as lead guitar. His virtuosity conquered the hearts of the audiences and since then Sasha has become a most desirable guest and participant in national and international gigs, tours and recordings.
Liapin’s desire to eradicate the repetitive patterns of pop culture propelled him to create his own group, TELE U, in 1984, which united him with avant-garde studio guitarist and teacher at Modest P. Musorgskiy Musical College (Leningrad), Vladimir Gustov. In time, Sasha’s experimentations needed a broader individual space so he came out with another project, Aquarium, which was invited by Crosby, Stills, & Nash to Montreal’s Forum, organized by the World Congress of Doctors for the World without Nuclear Weapons in 1986. Two years after this debut on the international scene, Sasha appeared as The Experiments of Alexander Liapin, a two-week tour in Finland, followed by a concert in 1990 at the LA Palladium.
At that time Liapin was lead guitar of the project, Pop Mechanica, designed by another “Art Revolutionist”, the late Serge Kuryohin. Kuryohin’s concept was based on bringing together diverse styles, patterns, aesthetic principles, and genres, and staging them as a theatrical extravaganza. He believed that New Art can be born only from within the mix of all possible and available artistic elements and resources.
Pop Mechanica presented in England, the U.S., Sweden, West Germany, and Japan.
Sasha’s Rock Mechanica was a tribute to his friend and teacher, and of course was yet another step on the same path in the art field, considering the manifold possibilities of multimedia and the evolution of Art Concepts and Human Consciousness.
During his extended stay and tour of the US from 2002-2004, Liapin studied and consulted at the Kenny J Record Studio in Los Angeles, where he was invited to audition for Cirque du Soleil in Las Vegas and to play in concert with B.B. King in Dallas, TX , all along playing with different musicians absorbing American vibes. After returning to Russia he created a program ‘HWY-1’ featuring his nomadic experience across the U.S. (Washington DC –Denver-Grand Canyon- Las Vegas- San Diego), which he successfully presented to Russian audiences. The CD album: ‘HWY-1’ is currently in production in his studio and is ready for release.
Liapin is eager to present his current project across the U.S., to bring his Russian cultural heritage to enrich the American scene for the sake of Art, Peace, Love and international collaboration.
